The Service

Clinic-Quality Care at Home

A home visit isn't a scaled-down version of our clinic service. We bring the full clinical setup — otoscope, magnifying loupes, microsuction device, and irrigation equipment — to your home. The assessment, the technique, and the aftercare are identical to what you'd receive in South Molton.

Full Clinical Assessment

Every visit starts with an otoscopic examination to assess the wax and confirm the safest removal method.

Microsuction or Irrigation

Both techniques are available at home. Microsuction is most common — it requires no water and works in any setting.

45–60 Minutes

Including setup, consultation, treatment of one or both ears, and aftercare advice.

Within 20 Miles

We cover a wide area of North Devon from our South Molton base. Call to confirm your postcode.

Step by Step

What Happens at Your Home Visit

From booking to aftercare — here's exactly what to expect.

01

Book Your Visit

Call us on 01769 302119 or use our online booking form. We'll confirm your address, agree a time, and advise you to start using ear drops 3–5 days beforehand.

02

Practitioner Arrives

Your practitioner arrives with a full clinical kit. All you need is a comfortable chair or bed with good head support. We bring everything else.

03

Otoscopic Assessment

Your ears are examined with an illuminated otoscope to assess wax type, quantity, and whether your eardrum is intact. This determines the safest removal method.

04

Wax Removed

Microsuction or irrigation is performed — whichever is most appropriate for you. Both ears can be treated in the same appointment.

05

Post-Procedure Check

Your practitioner examines your ears again to confirm the wax has been cleared and checks the condition of your eardrums.

06

Aftercare & Follow-Up

You'll receive personalised aftercare advice. If a follow-up is needed — for example, if wax was too hard to remove in one visit — we return at no extra charge.

If earwax seems to return over time, read recurrent earwax and removal timing for why a calendar schedule is not right for everyone.

For age-aware information about hearing changes, consent and access boundaries, read earwax in older adults.

Who It's For

Who Benefits Most from Home Visits?

Home visits are available to anyone who finds clinic attendance difficult — or who simply prefers the comfort of being treated at home. There's no medical requirement to justify a home visit.

Mobility Difficulties

Patients with limited mobility, chronic pain, or conditions that make travel uncomfortable. No need to arrange transport or navigate a waiting room.

Older Adults

Earwax impaction affects around a third of older adults in care settings (BJGP). For this group, getting to a clinic is often the biggest barrier to treatment.

Care Home Residents

We visit care homes and residential settings. If you're a carer or care manager, call us to arrange a visit for one or more residents.

Hearing Aid Wearers

Regular ear care is essential for hearing aid users — wax blocks ports and degrades sound quality. A home visit schedule removes the friction of frequent clinic trips.

Post-Operative Recovery

If you're recovering from surgery or illness and can't travel, a home visit means your ear health doesn't have to wait.

Personal Preference

No waiting room, no travel stress, no parking. Some patients simply prefer being treated at home — and that's a completely valid reason.

For visits in a residential setting, read about care-home ear care and arranging a visit.

Hearing Aid Users

Blocked ear canals reduce hearing aid effectiveness and accelerate receiver wear. Our hearing aids and earwax provides more context.

Before Your Appointment

Preparing for Your Home Visit

The most important preparation is using ear drops for three to five days before the appointment. Olive oil drops — the NHS's recommended first-line option — soften the wax and make removal faster and more comfortable. Apply two to three drops to the affected ear three to four times daily, lying on your side for five to ten minutes after each application.

For the visit itself, you'll need a comfortable chair or bed where you can sit or lie with your head supported. Good lighting is helpful but not essential — we bring our own. You don't need to prepare anything else.

If you're arranging the visit for someone else, let us know in advance about any access requirements, relevant health conditions, or history of ear problems. This helps us prepare appropriately.

When urgent medical advice is the right next step

Do not use a routine home-visit booking for sudden hearing loss, hearing that is worsening over days or weeks, severe pain, discharge or bleeding, or acute dizziness. Use NHS 111 for urgent advice. For severe or sudden presentations, attend A&E or call 999.
