Ear drops can soften earwax before it clears naturally or before a clinician removes it. They do not confirm that wax is the cause of a blocked ear, and they do not make one drop suitable for everyone. The NHS advises olive or almond oil for some earwax build-up, while NICE specifies pre-treatment softeners for adult ear irrigation immediately before treatment or for up to five days beforehand. 1 2
If hearing loss came on suddenly, or has worsened rapidly without a clear external or middle-ear cause, seek urgent medical assessment rather than assuming wax is responsible. 2
Do earwax drops work?
Earwax, also called cerumen, normally moves out of the ear canal without treatment. When it builds up, a softening product may help it move or make later removal easier. The evidence does not identify one universal “best” drop. A Cochrane review found no high-quality evidence that one type of cerumenolytic, meaning an earwax-softening product, is more effective than another. It also found no evidence that oil-based options differ in effect from non-oil-based options, or that water or saline is better or worse than commercially produced softeners. 3
Choose a product only after considering the product information, your ear history and advice from a pharmacist or clinician. The table below helps separate the question of what a product is for from the question of whether it is suitable for you.

The main categories of earwax softeners
The labels and ingredients vary. It helps to think in broad categories rather than treating a brand name as a clinical recommendation.
Oil-based preparations
NHS public guidance describes olive or almond oil for earwax build-up and includes an almond-allergy warning. 1 These products are intended to soften wax. They are not a diagnosis, a cure for every blocked-ear symptom or a substitute for checking a history of perforation.
Saline and water-based options

Commercial cerumenolytics
Pharmacists may suggest medicines marketed to dissolve or soften earwax. 1 These may use different formulations, including peroxide-containing commercial products. Formulation, warnings, permitted age groups and instructions vary. Follow the specific product information rather than applying a dose, concentration or duration from another product or website.

Preparing safely for an earwax-removal appointment
Preparation depends on the planned method, your ear history and the product you are considering. NICE’s pre-treatment-softener recommendation applies to adult electronic ear irrigation. It does not say that every person having microsuction must use drops first. 2

What to avoid
Do not put cotton buds, fingers or other objects into the ear canal. NICE advises against this because objects can push wax further in and damage the ear canal or eardrum. 2 Read more about why cotton buds can make wax problems worse.
This page also does not provide a household-hydrogen-peroxide recipe, a DIY dilution, home irrigation steps or a mechanical-removal method. Those approaches carry different risks and do not replace an examination when the cause of symptoms is uncertain.
When to seek further help
The NHS advises contacting a GP practice if earwax symptoms have not cleared after five days, or if the ear is badly blocked and you cannot hear. A pharmacist can also give product and access advice. 1
For sudden hearing loss, rapid deterioration, or hearing loss that does not appear to be explained by an external or middle-ear cause, NICE sets out urgent referral pathways for adults. Do not delay urgent assessment because you think the problem may be earwax. 2
